
As African cities grow hotter, denser and more dependent on mechanical cooling, a generation of buildings from Ghana’s post-independence era offers a provocative question: did we already discover a better way to build?
Walk through parts of Accra or Kumasi and, every so often, an older building interrupts the contemporary city.
It may not immediately appear extraordinary.
There might be a long concrete balcony stretching across its façade. A wall of perforated blocks shields a staircase. Windows sit deep beneath projecting slabs. A verandah wraps around the house. Slender columns lift part of the structure from the ground.
Look more carefully and the building begins to reveal something else.
It was designed for the sun.
It was designed for rain.
It was designed for air to move through it.
This is part of the architectural inheritance we now call Tropical Modernism.
And at a moment when African cities are expanding at extraordinary speed, when temperatures are rising and when air conditioning increasingly compensates for buildings poorly adapted to their environments, Tropical Modernism deserves to be discussed as more than architectural history.
The more interesting question is whether some of its ideas belong to Africa's future.
Modernism Arrives in the Tropics
Modernism transformed architecture during the twentieth century.
Its architects rejected much of the ornament and historical imitation that had dominated previous architectural traditions. Buildings became cleaner and more geometric. Reinforced concrete, steel and glass opened new possibilities. Structure could become architecture.
But transplanting European Modernism directly into tropical climates created an obvious problem.
Heat.
Large areas of exposed glass could become uncomfortable under intense sunlight. Heavy rainfall required protection. Humidity demanded ventilation. Buildings needed shade.
Architecture designed for London or continental Europe could not simply be reproduced in Accra.
Modernism had to adapt.
And that adaptation produced some of the most distinctive architecture of the tropical twentieth century.
Ghana Became an Important Laboratory
Ghana occupies an important place in this story.
Architecture during the late colonial and early post-independence periods became entangled with a much larger transformation of the country.
Independence was not simply political.
The new nation needed schools, universities, government institutions, housing, hospitals, libraries and civic buildings. Architecture became part of the physical construction of the state.
Modernism offered a language associated with progress and technological possibility.
But Ghana's climate forced architects to modify that language.
Buildings developed deep overhangs.
Windows were recessed.
External corridors became shaded circulation spaces.
Concrete screens protected façades.
Open staircases encouraged ventilation.
Courtyards brought air and light into buildings.
Verandahs created habitable spaces between indoors and outdoors.
The result was neither completely European Modernism nor traditional West African architecture.
Something else was emerging.
The Building Had to Breathe
Perhaps the most important idea behind Tropical Modernism was remarkably straightforward:
The building itself should help make its occupants comfortable.
Before mechanical air conditioning became ubiquitous, architecture had to perform much of the environmental work.
Orientation mattered.
A building could be positioned to minimise the most punishing solar exposure.
Windows on opposite sides of a room could create cross ventilation.
High-level openings allowed hot air to escape.
Deep roofs protected walls and windows from sun and rain.
Balconies and verandahs acted as thermal buffers.
Trees and landscaping provided another layer of shade.
These weren't decorative additions.
They were part of the environmental machinery of the building.
Then Came the Brise Soleil
One of Tropical Modernism's most recognisable devices was the brise soleil — literally, the "sun breaker."
The principle is simple.
Instead of allowing intense sunlight to strike a window directly, another architectural layer is placed in front of it.
That layer might consist of concrete fins, projecting slabs, perforated blocks or carefully angled elements.
The sun hits the screen first.
Air can continue moving behind it.
The interior receives filtered daylight rather than the full force of direct tropical radiation.
But in Ghana and elsewhere in West Africa, these screens became more than environmental devices.
They became architecture.
Designers discovered that repeating concrete modules could produce enormous sculptural façades. Sunlight created patterns across corridors and walls. Screens provided privacy while maintaining ventilation.
Function generated identity.
Today, breeze blocks are fashionable again.
But simply putting decorative perforated blocks on a contemporary house does not make it Tropical Modernist.
The important thing is why the screen is there.
The Verandah Was Architecture Too
Another element deserves similar attention.
The verandah.
In many older Ghanaian houses, the verandah was not leftover space around the building.
It was one of the most important rooms.
It was shaded but open.
Private but connected to the compound.
Protected from rain but exposed to moving air.
People could sit, talk, eat, receive visitors or simply escape the heat of the interior.
Tropical Modernism understood the architectural value of this intermediate condition.
There was not always a hard boundary between inside and outside.
Instead there were layers:
Street. Compound. Screen. Verandah. Room. Courtyard.
Each transition helped control privacy, sunlight, temperature and social interaction.
That is a remarkably sophisticated response to tropical living.
What Happened to That Intelligence?
Look at many contemporary African cities and the architectural aspiration has changed.
Glass façades have become symbols of corporate modernity.
Large houses are frequently sealed behind walls.
Windows are sometimes designed around the expectation of air conditioning rather than natural ventilation.
Architectural imagery travels instantly across Instagram, Pinterest and property-development marketing.
A house conceived for another climate can be reproduced in Accra with remarkably little modification.
And mechanical systems compensate for what architecture fails to solve.
The consequences are significant.
A building that absorbs enormous quantities of solar heat can still be comfortable.
You simply install enough cooling equipment.
But that comfort comes with an energy cost.
Tropical Modernism asks a different question:
What can architecture solve before the air conditioner is switched on?
This Is Not an Argument for Going Backwards
There is a danger in romanticising old architecture.
Not every Modernist building performed perfectly.
Not every historic house should be copied.
Materials, construction techniques, lifestyles and expectations have changed.
Contemporary families require different kitchens, bathrooms, security systems, communications infrastructure and patterns of privacy.
Modern glazing performs differently.
Solar power has changed what buildings can generate.
Computational modelling allows architects to analyse sunlight, airflow and thermal performance with precision that earlier generations could only approximate.
So the opportunity is not to recreate 1960.
It is to ask what Tropical Modernism would have become if we had continued developing it.
Tropical Modernism 2.0
Imagine a contemporary Ghanaian house designed from the climate outward.
Its roof extends far enough to genuinely shade the walls.
Its western façade has fewer exposed openings.
Bedrooms receive controlled daylight.
A modern brise soleil sits away from the glazing, creating a ventilated second skin.
A courtyard pulls daylight into the centre of the house.
Windows are positioned to generate cross ventilation.
Solar panels sit above a properly ventilated roof.
Rainwater is deliberately collected.
Landscaping shades hard surfaces.
Verandahs become living spaces again.
Air conditioning remains available — but becomes one component of comfort rather than the entire strategy.
Now combine that climatic intelligence with contemporary engineering, African materials, digital fabrication and modern construction.
That could produce an architecture simultaneously rooted in history and completely contemporary.
Beyond the Famous Buildings
There is another part of this story that deserves attention.
Tropical Modernism does not survive only in celebrated institutional buildings.
It survives quietly in Ghana's residential neighbourhoods.
Across Accra and Kumasi are houses whose architects may never appear in international architectural histories.
Curved balconies.
Long horizontal verandahs.
Concrete ventilation blocks.
Slim columns.
Deep projecting roofs.
External staircases.
Decorative metalwork.
Screened compounds.
Some are sophisticated architect-designed houses. Others represent ideas that migrated from institutional Modernism into ordinary domestic construction.
Together they constitute an extraordinary architectural archive.
And that archive is disappearing.
Buildings are being altered, enclosed, extended or demolished.
As land values rise, many will inevitably disappear.
Documenting them therefore matters.
Not because cities should become museums, but because once these buildings disappear, part of the evidence of how Ghana developed its own response to Modernism disappears with them.
The Bigger African Question
Tropical Modernism also forces us to confront a larger question about African architecture.
Who determines what an African city should look like?
For generations, architectural ideas have moved between Africa and the rest of the world through colonialism, education, commerce, migration and technology.
That exchange will continue.
African architecture does not need to isolate itself to become authentic.
But there is a difference between participating in global architecture and importing buildings without interrogating whether they belong to the climate, economy or culture in which they are being constructed.
The strongest African architecture of the future may therefore be neither nostalgic nor aggressively futuristic.
It may simply be extraordinarily specific.
Specific to sunlight.
Specific to rainfall.
Specific to materials.
Specific to how families live.
Specific to how streets function.
Specific to the economics of construction.
Specific to Africa.
Tropical Modernism Was Never Finished
Perhaps that is why these old buildings remain so compelling.
They represent an unfinished experiment.
Their architects were attempting to reconcile Modernism with climate, technology with geography, and international ideas with the realities of tropical life.
The answers were imperfect.
But the questions were remarkably good.
And decades later, many of those questions have become more urgent.
How do we build comfortable cities without making them completely dependent on mechanical cooling?
How do we create density without eliminating shade and ventilation?
How do we preserve privacy without turning every home into a fortress?
How can locally manufactured building components become architectural identity?
And what should African Modernism look like in the twenty-first century?
The answers will not come from copying the past.
But perhaps we should pay much closer attention to what the past was trying to teach us.
Tropical Modernism should not be remembered simply as the architecture Africa once built.
It should become part of the conversation about what Africa builds next.
