High Court Challenge, Leadership Installation And Reported Shooting Incident Draw National Attention

A leadership dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission has intensified following the death of its founder, Apostle Emeritus Prof. Dr. Ing. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, with the matter now before the High Court and new reports emerging of an alleged shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo.

The dispute centers on the succession of leadership within the Kristo Asafo Mission, one of Ghana's most influential religious movements.

Two senior church members, Kweku Agyenim Boateng, a former Deputy General Secretary of the Mission, and Seth Appiah Richard Brown, a longtime member and former Executive Assistant to the late founder, have filed a lawsuit challenging the planned installation of Israel Kwadwo Safo, also known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, as the next leader of the church.

The suit was filed on June 19, 2026, at the General Jurisdiction Division of the High Court in Accra.

According to court documents, the plaintiffs argue that the Kristo Asafo Mission Constitution, first introduced in 2017 and amended in 2024, should govern the succession process.

They contend that while Apostle Kwadwo Safo had previously designated Israel Kwadwo Safo as his successor under an earlier arrangement, amendments made to the constitution in 2024 altered the succession framework and must now be followed.

The plaintiffs are seeking declarations from the court regarding the interpretation of the constitution and the legality of the succession process.

Despite the legal challenge, reports indicate that Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena was sworn in as leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

During the ceremony, he reportedly called for unity among members and urged followers to remain committed to the vision established by his late father.

The legal questions surrounding the leadership transition remain before the courts.

Reports Of Alleged Shooting Incident

Meanwhile, former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, is reportedly receiving medical treatment following an alleged shooting incident in Accra on Sunday.

According to reports attributed to sources close to her team, unidentified gunmen allegedly opened fire on a vehicle in which she was travelling.

The source claimed the incident occurred near the residence of her brother.

Images circulating on social media appear to show Adwoa Safo receiving medical attention, while separate photographs purportedly show bullet damage to a vehicle allegedly involved in the incident.

Reports further allege that multiple rounds of ammunition were discharged and that one bullet grazed her neck.

However, Africa Reporters Network has not independently verified the claims, the authenticity of the images, or the circumstances surrounding the reported attack.

At the time of publication, the Ghana Police Service had not issued an official statement on the incident.

A Movement At A Crossroads

The developments come at a significant moment for the Kristo Asafo Mission as it prepares to bid farewell to its founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo, who passed away on September 11, 2025, at the age of 77.

Widely regarded as one of Ghana's most influential inventors, industrialists and religious leaders, Apostle Safo built a movement that extended beyond religion into manufacturing, agriculture, technology and African self-reliance through the Kantanka Group and related institutions.

Funeral activities are expected to take place in July, including burial rites at Gomoa Mpota in the Central Region and a national farewell service in Accra.

As legal proceedings continue and authorities investigate the reported shooting incident, attention remains focused on one of Ghana's most prominent religious and industrial institutions during a pivotal moment in its history.

This remains a developing story.
